PART 1: PREPARE

1. Gather supplies

You will need your system. A screwdriver. A Crucial SSD. A SATA- to-USB cable. And your system’s owner’s manual. If you don’t have a SATA-to-USB cable, you can get one in the Crucial SSD Install Kit, which is sold separately.

2. Back up important files

Before starting the actual installation, take a few moments to save any important files on your computer to an external storage drive or a USB drive.

PART 2: COPY

1. Connect the SSD to your system

Get started by using the SATA-to-USB cable to connect the SSD to your computer. When handling your SSD, don’t touch its gold connector pins with your fingers.

2. Download the software that copies your old drive to your new SSD

3. Copy or “clone” your data.

PART 3: INSTALL

1. Turn off your computer.

Begin by turning off your computer. Unplug the SATA-to-USB cable from your Laptop and remove the cable from your SSD once it's turned off.

2. Disconnect the power cord and batteries.

Remove the power cable as well as the battery. It's worth noting that the battery removal phase only applies to laptops where the battery may be removed. Consult your owner's handbook to learn how to accomplish this on your specific system.

3. Press and hold the power button for a total of 5 seconds.

Now that the battery is removed, press and hold the power button for 5 seconds to discharge any remaining electricity in the system.

4. Begin by opening the case.

5. Ground yourself

You can now examine the components of your system, and there's nothing to be afraid of! Simply touch an unpainted metal surface to ground yourself. The components of your system are protected by grounding from the static charge that is naturally present in your body.

6. Find the storage area.

Now you must find your storage bay. However, the location of your existing hard drive will differ, and it could be under the bottom panel, under the keyboard, or on the side. Because every system is slightly different, see your owner's handbook for the precise location.

7. Disconnect your previous hard drive

Disconnect any wires and brackets that are connected to your old storage drive before removing it. Often, you'll need to check closely at the drive for screws holding brackets, pull tabs, or supporting frames to the drive, which can be found on the top or sides. Remove these and connect them to your SSD in the same way.

8. Reattach the SSD's cables and brackets.

Now connect the SSD to your laptop. Don't worry about whether the label is facing up or down; this will differ by system. Don't force the connection when connecting in the SSD. If it's unsteady and you're placing it into a laptop, check for any brackets, adapters, support frames, braces, pull tabs, or screws that might be attached to the old drive you removed.

9. Reassemble your system

Once the SSD is securely seated in the storage bay, put your system back together and reconnect the battery into a laptop.

10. Turn on your laptop and boot up your system.
